The Evansville Police Department says a bicyclist who was hit by a vehicle near Pollack Avenue and Weinbach Avenue on Thursday has died in the hospital due to injuries sustained in the crash.

According to EPD, the crash happened just before 1:00 p.m. on Thursday in the area of Pollack and Weinbach.

EPD says the driver of the vehicle involved had exited the Dollar Tree parking lot on Weinbach Avenue to go west on Pollack
Avenue. As the driver entered the roadway, he struck the bicyclist who was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Pollack.

Before officers could arrive, a good samaritan performed chest compressions on the cyclist until officers arrived. The first arriving officer took over chest compressions until an ambulance crew could assist.

EPD says while on the scene of the accident, the cyclist still had a pulse, but later died at St. Vincent Hospital

The Vanderburgh County Coroner later identified the cyclist who died as 61-year-old Steven Chappell of Evansville. The coroner says Chappell died from head and neck fractures sustained in the crash.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital where a blood draw was performed.

EPD says the investigation is ongoing and the driver of the vehicle has not been charged with any offense pending lab work results from the state lab.

No further information has been released at this time.
